The Driftless Area, also known as the Paleozoic Plateau, is a region in the Upper Midwest of the United States that was left untouched by the last glacial period that occurred around 11,000 years ago. The region covers parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois and is characterized by unique terrain with steep bluffs, winding rivers, and deep valleys. Because it was never covered by glaciers, the soil is rich and fertile, making it a prime agricultural region. Its natural beauty and unusual geology have also made it a popular destination for outdoor recreation, such as camping, hiking, and canoeing. The Driftless Area is also home to many unique plant and animal species, some of which are found nowhere else in the world.
